What are the most popular Chinese baby names?

For girls born in 2021, 若汐 (ruòxī), 一诺 (yīnuò), 艺涵 (yìhán); for boys, 沐宸 (mùchén), 浩宇 (hàoyǔ), 沐辰 (mùchén). The Ministry of Public Security counts the names of every baby registered each year.

Why do 沐宸 and 沐辰 sound the same?

Parents often choose a sound first, then the characters for it: 沐宸 and 沐辰 are both mùchén, and 奕辰, 亦辰 and 亦宸 are all yìchén. The characters carry the meaning, so two names that sound alike can mean quite different things.

How do Chinese given names work?

The given name comes after the surname and is one or two characters, chosen for their meaning and sound: 王若汐 is Wang Ruoxi. There is no fixed list of names, so parents put together the characters they like, and most names are shared by few people.

How do I choose a Chinese name?

Pick one or two characters whose meaning you like from the lists by meaning, hear them with your surname, and keep the sound easy to say. Our name translator also writes your own name in Chinese and makes a Chinese-style name from its sounds.

Can’t hear it?

Play uses your device’s Mandarin voice. Edge, Chrome and Safari have one; a browser with none plays each character in our recorded voice instead.
