What is the difference between Shanxi and Shaanxi?

Only the tone: 山西 (shānxī, Shanxi) has a first tone and 陕西 (shǎnxī, Shaanxi) a third. Shaanxi is spelt with a double a to tell the two apart in English.

How did the provinces get their names?

Many say where they lie: 河北 (héběi, Hebei) and 河南 (hénán, Henan) are north and south of the Yellow River, 湖北 (húběi, Hubei) and 湖南 (húnán, Hunan) north and south of Dongting Lake, and 山东 (shāndōng, Shandong) and 山西 (shānxī, Shanxi) east and west of the Taihang Mountains.

What do Beijing and Nanjing mean?

京 (jīng) is a capital: 北京 (Běijīng) is the northern capital and 南京 (Nánjīng) the southern one.

What are the one-character names for provinces?

Each province also has a one-character name, used on number plates and in names like 川菜 (Sichuan food): 京 (jīng) for Beijing, 沪 (hù) for Shanghai, 川 (chuān) for Sichuan, 粤 (yuè) for Guangdong, 湘 (xiāng) for Hunan and 鲁 (lǔ) for Shandong.
