How to say sorry in Chinese

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

At half past eleven at night, Anna lay in bed and wrote a WeChat message to her best friend: “In today’s meeting, the boss did all the talking for three hours. I fell asleep twice, and he didn’t see either time!”

She put her phone down and went to have a shower.

Ten minutes later, she picked up her phone and her face went red. It hadn’t gone to her best friend. It had gone to the company group chat! Thirty colleagues were in that group, and so was the boss.

She pressed and held the message straight away to unsend it. But it was too late: after two minutes, a message can’t be unsent.

All she could do was apologise. Anna had been learning Chinese for two years, and she knew three words for sorry.

“I’m sorry”? Too heavy, as if she’d driven the boss’s car into a river.

“Sorry about that”? This one was too light, as if she’d only been a minute late for a meeting.

“My apologies”? Not too heavy, not too light, and common at work. That was the one!

She wrote carefully: “My apologies, this message was meant for a friend.” She read it three more times before she dared to send it.

The group was silent. Thirty people, and not one of them said a word. Anna watched her phone, waiting for the boss to say “That’s OK”.

A minute later, the boss replied:

“I’ve seen it now.”
