The Seventh Floor, Episode 13: Not His Parcels

Name: ________________ Date: ________

English (for the teacher)

Last night, Qiao An followed Zou Yeye up to the seventh floor and saw the little green leaves he had planted. But he said he hadn't bought the seventh-floor parcels.

She looked at him: "You didn't buy them? Then who did?"

"I don't know." Zou Yeye slowly sat down on the old chair. "One evening this January, I was walking past the parcel station, and from outside I saw a little package sitting on her desk. It said: 'Building Six, seventh floor.'"

"Only the old neighbours call this place 'the seventh floor'. I thought it had to be some kind neighbour who knew she loved flowers best and wanted to help me grow flowers on the seventh floor again."

"Then why did you wait until midnight to collect them?"

He looked at the flowerpots, and only after a while did he answer: "If I went in the daytime, I'd have to see people and say thank you. I'm no good at saying things like that."

"And they were always left on her desk. When I went to pick them up, I felt as if she had been keeping them for me all along."

At last she understood why he had said those words that night. She felt a little sad.

"Then have you asked the neighbours?"

"I have. I asked the old neighbours in Building Six one by one, and they all said they didn't know."

The wind grew stronger, and the little green leaves kept moving. Qiao An thought for a moment and asked quietly, "Grandpa, do you have family in Guangzhou?"

Zou Yeye's face went pale. He stood up, walked over to the window and looked out, silent for a long time. In the end he said just one word: "No."

But she didn't quite believe him.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Mr Luo.

"Qiao An, where are you? I've just got to the parcel station, and another seventh-floor parcel has come in." The line went quiet for a moment, then he said, "This one is different. It has a phone number on it."
