How do you answer a compliment in Chinese?
The modest answer is 哪里哪里 (nǎli nǎli, “where, where?”, as in “not at all”) or 过奖了 (guòjiǎng le, “you praise me too much”). Many people, especially younger ones, simply say 谢谢 (xièxie, thank you).
How do you tell someone they look good in Chinese?
你真漂亮 (nǐ zhēn piàoliang, you’re so beautiful) for a woman, 你好帅 (nǐ hǎo shuài, you’re so handsome) for a man, or 你穿这件衣服很好看 (you look great in that) for anyone. 你今天气色很好 says they look healthy and well.
How do I say them right?
Press Play and say each phrase with the voice, slow first, then at normal speed. Each word’s pinyin is above it, its tone marked.
Can’t hear it?
Play uses your device’s Mandarin voice. Edge, Chrome and Safari have one; on other browsers, add Chinese speech in your system’s language settings.
