What are GCSE and A level Chinese?

GCSE Chinese (spoken Mandarin) is taken at 16 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland with Pearson Edexcel or AQA, at Foundation or Higher tier, in four papers: listening, speaking, reading and writing. A level Chinese, from Pearson Edexcel, follows at 18 and tests listening, reading and translation in its first paper.

What is on this practice test?

Sixteen questions at GCSE Chinese Higher: eight listening and eight reading, drawn from 20 for this level, so each try is different. Questions are in English, as most GCSE questions are, and some readings ask what a sentence means, as the translation tasks do.

How is it scored?

You see the share you got right and each part’s count, then every question with the right answer and its English. Grade boundaries are set after each exam series, and the real papers also have written answers, so this page doesn’t guess a 9 to 1 grade.

How does listening work?

Each recording plays on its own once, and you may play it once more, in your device’s Mandarin voice, a second voice for the other speaker. Chrome, Edge and Safari have Mandarin voices.

Is this an official paper?

No. Every text and question is our own, written for this level’s themes; people in them are invented. Not affiliated with Pearson Edexcel or AQA.
