h: Further back than English h, with a little friction, like a soft version of the ch in Scottish “loch”.
e: e on its own is not the e in “bed”: it is like the “uh” in “duh” said with the lips spread and the tongue pulled back.

hē 喝 to drink · hé 合 to close · hè 贺 to congratulate. hě isn’t used in standard Mandarin. The pinyin trainer practices telling them apart in real words.
