    How it works

Every word is a real HSK 1–4 word, said by one of the two voices in the app’s word cards. When you say it, the page measures your pitch every hundredth of a second and draws it over the speaker’s, then checks each syllable’s tone: does it rise, fall, dip low or stay high and level? A syllable passes when it follows the speaker’s closely or when its tone is clearly the right one, measured against your own voice’s range, so a deep voice and a high one are judged alike.

Why your line won’t match exactly

Every voice is different, and a deep voice and a high one move by different amounts. What matters is the shape: where it rises, falls or stays level, and where the second syllable starts. Your try is compared with the clip you just heard, so its tone changes count too: 你好 is said ní hǎo.

    Your voice stays here

The page asks for the microphone only when you first press Say it, keeps it on while you practise so it hears the start of every word, and turns it off after a minute without a try or when you leave the page. It measures your pitch in this browser and keeps only your voice’s usual pitch here, so it can tell your high from your low; nothing is recorded or sent.
