How do you answer the phone in Chinese?
喂 (wéi), then 你好 (nǐ hǎo). 喂 is said with a rising tone on the phone, and only on the phone: to get someone’s attention in person it can sound rude. To ask who is calling, 请问是哪位?
How do you say a phone number in Chinese?
Digit by digit, and 1 is said yāo, not yī, so it can’t be heard as 7 (qī): 138 is yāo sān bā. Our number converter says any phone number for you.
How do I say them right?
Press Play and say each phrase with the voice, slow first, then at normal speed. Each word’s pinyin is above it, its tone marked.
Can’t hear it?
Play uses your device’s Mandarin voice. Edge, Chrome and Safari have one; a browser with none plays each word in our recorded voice instead.
