YouTube with pinyin subtitles

Watch a Chinese video with every line in characters and pinyin.

Press play.

How do I get pinyin subtitles on YouTube?

Pick a video above and press play: each line shows in characters with its pinyin over every word, coloured by tone, as it is spoken. To get the same on any YouTube video, add the Mandarin The Wild extension to Chrome: it puts the line, its pinyin and a card for every word under YouTube’s own player.

What if a video has no Chinese subtitles?

The extension makes them from the sound, a minute at a time as you watch, and keeps them, so the next person who opens the same video gets them at once. Those are the lines this page shows.

Where does the pinyin come from?

Our own reader splits each line into words and gives each word the reading it has in that sentence, so 行 in 银行 reads háng and in 不行 reads xíng. A word whose reading isn’t settled stays in characters rather than guess.

Is it free?

Yes. Watching with pinyin here and on YouTube with the extension costs nothing, with no account.
