What is the HSKK?

The HSKK is the spoken part of the HSK, China’s Mandarin test. It has three levels, Beginner (初级), Intermediate (中级) and Advanced (高级), each recorded and marked by examiners. You speak into a microphone against a clock, with preparation time at the start.

What is on each level?

Beginner: 15 sentences to hear and say back, 10 short questions to answer, and 2 questions to talk on, about 20 minutes with 7 of them to prepare. Intermediate: 10 sentences to say back, 2 pictures to describe and 2 questions to talk on, about 21 minutes with 10 of them to prepare. Advanced: 3 passages to retell, 1 to read aloud and 2 questions to talk on, about 24 minutes with 10 of them to prepare. Here, Advanced retells a long sentence each time, since our narrators’ passages are recorded a sentence at a time.

How does this practice test work?

It runs each part in the exam’s order and timing. A native narrator says each sentence once; you speak when the clock starts and press Done when you finish. At the end you hear every answer you gave, each beside the narrator’s, so you can hear where you dropped a word or a tone.

Does it give me a score?

No. Examiners mark how complete, accurate and fluent you are, and no machine marks that fairly yet. Hearing yourself next to a native speaker is what shows you what to fix.

Is my voice recorded or sent?

Your answers are recorded in this browser so you can hear them back. Nothing is kept or sent, and they are gone when you leave the page.
